About Granite Origin: Granite is a igneous rock containing at least 20% quartz by volume, but also some mica and feldspar. It’s mined around the world, including India, Brazil, Norway, Italy and China. The largest granite quarry in the United States is near Barre, Vermont. Environmental Impact: Medium. Granite is durable and recyclable, but requires large amounts of energy for transport, and mining is very resource-intensive. Quartz
Quartz is a man-made engineered stone surface formed by combining 90% ground quartz (a natural hard mineral) with 8-10% resins, polymers, and pigments. This forms a very hard granite-like surface. How it looks depends on how the quartz is ground: coarsely-ground quartz produces a flecked appearance while finely-ground quartz produces a smooth look. Quartzite
Quartzite, which is predominantly silica, is a hard non-foliated metamorphic rock which was originally sandstone. Sandstone is converted into quartzite through heating and pressure related to tectonic compression. Its siliceous nature makes it a perfect choice for kitchen countertops because chemically it has a very high resistance to anything acidic. The most popular quartzites currently in the market come from the northeast of Brazil. These colors include Taj Mahal, Perla Venata, Nacarado, Fusion, and White Macubus. Quartzites are even harder than granite, which makes them ideal for interior and exterior uses. For many years, Quartzite has been considered a high-end finish and has been used throughout the world as a reliable, versatile building material. It has the strongest hardness compared to all natural stones available. Quartzite tends to have veining and softer, simple movements compared to granite. Marble
Marble is another popular choice of different countertop materials, and has been a sign of luxury and prestige for centuries. Commercially, any stone that can be polished is also known as marble, with the exception of granite. This includes serpentine, travertine, limestone and onyx. Often called “green” marble, serpentine marble is not actually marble but looks very similar and is more stain- and spill-proof than marble.The most popular marbles come from Carrara, Italy. These include Carrara (from which Michelangelo sculpted his Statue of David) to Calacatta, Statuary, and White Venatino. Spain is also a source for well-known marbles such as Crema Marfil and Emperador Dark. Danby Marble
Our Danby marbles are all quarried in Vermont at the largest underground marble quarry in the world. Danby marbles are harder and less porous than many other marbles, which makes them more suitable for countertop materials than your typical marble. The most popular Danby marbles include the reasonably priced Mountain White, Olympia, Eureka and MontClair as well the more luxurious and expensive Imperial. Due to its unmatched durability and stain resistance, Danby marble is an excellent countertop or tile flooring for both residential and commercial projects. Soapstone, Slate and Sandstone
Soapstone Soapstone has a timeless, rustic appearance which makes it a popular choice for kitchen countertops. It is a natural stone, like granite, that is quarried. Soapstone is non-porous and composed mostly of mineral talc, which makes it quite soft (it can etch and scratch easily), but varieties used for countertops typically have higher percentages of quartz in them, which makes them harder and more suitable as a kitchen surface. The most popular soapstone comes from Brazil and in its natural state is grey with some white veining. Many homeowners will oil the soapstone at installation which can leave it with a much darker and richer background color. Unique Stone Concepts offers only a few soapstone options, as this material has a more limited supply compared to other natural stones. Limestone is a versatile building material that can be used in either commercial or residential construction projects. Limestone quarries can be found around the world, including very large ones in the United States. Most limestone is softer and less dense than granite and more homogeneous in appearance. We carry a full line of limestones from Portugal, as well as the very well-known Jura Beige and Jura Grey limestones from Germany.
